Utah Tree Fruit IPM Implementation Survey (1 year)
Principal Investigators: Marion Murray, Diane Alston, and Ruby Ward, Utah State University

The purpose of this project is to survey tree fruit growers in Utah to determine pest management practices -- in particular, IPM implementation. Researchers will analyze the data to determine current use of IPM, current pest control practices, key grower and farm characteristics that may influence adoption of IPM, perceived impediments to adoption, economic aspects of IPM, and preference for education delivery techniques. Researchers will also compare results of this survey to two past tree fruit IPM surveys conducted in 1996 and 2003. Results of the survey analyses will be used to evaluate the success of the Utah State University Tree Fruit IPM program and guide the program in future research and outreach activities.

Objectives: 1) Design and deliver a statewide tree fruit IPM assessment survey; and 2) from the survey data, determine the extent of IPM adoption and the education/research needs in Utah's tree fruit industry.

Survey to Assess IPM Implementation in Utah Vegetable Crops (1 year)
Principal Investigators: Marion Murray, Diane Alston, and Dan Drost, Utah State University

The purpose of this project is to gather information about Utah vegetable growers' changing pest management and horticultural needs. Researchers will survey all Utah vegetable growers farming one acre or more to determine pest management practices -- in particular, IPM implementation. Researchers will analyze the data to determine current use of IPM and all types of pest control practices, key grower and farm characteristics that may influence adoption of IPM, perceived impediments to adoption, economic aspects of IPM, and preference for education delivery techniques. Results of the survey analyses will be used to guide the vegetable IPM program in future research and outreach activities.

Objectives: 1) Design and deliver a statewide vegetable IPM assessment survey; and 2) from the survey data, determine extent of IPM adoption and the education/research needs in Utah's vegetable industry.

Survey of Insect Management Practices of Stored Rice in California (1 year)
Principal Investigators: Luis Espino, Randall Mutters, and Chris Greer, University of California Cooperative Extension

Rice in California is grown on approximately 500,000 acres annually, mostly in the Sacramento valley, and production averages 4 billion pounds. After harvest, grain is stored on-farm or in commercial facilities for periods ranging from a few weeks to several months. Insect infestations during storage can reduce the value of grain by reducing grade and quality. The current status of IPM of stored rice insects is unknown. Researchers propose to conduct a mail survey of Sacramento valley rice producers and commercial storage managers to collect baseline data regarding storage infrastructure, insect management practices, insecticide use, and the economic impacts of infestation. The information will serve to determine stored grain IPM research and extension needs, guide future research and extension efforts, and measure future IPM adoption. In addition, through outreach, meetings with stakeholders, and publications, researchers will promote the adoption of IPM practices of stored rice insects.

Objectives: 1) Collect baseline data regarding rice storage structures, insect management practices, insecticides use, and economic impacts of stored rice insects from Sacramento valley rice producers and dryers and mills; 2) determine the current use of insect IPM practices in California stored rice systems; 3) prioritize research and extension insect IPM needs in California stored rice systems; and 4) promote IPM of stored rice insects through outreach.
