Job Description and Responsibilities
The Department of Biology and the Utah Plant Pest Diagnostic Laboratory
(UPPDL) at Utah State University are seeking a Plant Disease Diagnostician.
The successful candidate is expected to provide diagnostic services
(identification of biotic and abiotic diseases and management recommendations
when applicable) to USU Extension personnel, homeowners, agricultural
and horticultural producers, state and federal agencies. Additional
responsibilities include training of Master Gardeners, giving presentations
at grower meetings, help with the development of Extension publications
and participate in the Western Plant Diagnostic Network (including
data entry into the network's database). The diagnostician will assist
the Extension Plant Pathologist and The Utah Department of Agriculture
and Food with providing phytosanitary certification for export of
agricultural products. The successful candidate will work with the
Extension Insect Diagnostician, IPM project leader and Cooperative
Agricultural Pest Survey Coordinator, and contribute to the maintenance
of UPPDL. Depending on the availability of resources the diagnostician
may assist with plant disease research. Pay scale depends on experience.

Requirements: A M.S. degree in Plant pathology or a closely related field with experience in isolation of fungi and/or bacteria and the use of morphological, serological and molecular techniques for identification such as microscopy, ELISA and PCR. Interest in both lab and field work is required. Candidates must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills. Experience in training Master Gardeners and with the Plant Diagnostic Network is preferred.
