Subject: Request for Information on Pesticides Use Remaining in 2003 for
Washington regarding Washington Toxics
coalition case
Initial information:
Washington state's response for information on necessary
pesticide applications for the remainder of 2003 (PDF 146K) for the
pesticides named in the Washington Toxics coalition case.
Additional information:
More tree fruit uses
First - 1,3-Dichloropropene (Telone) is the soil fumigant that is replacing methyl bromide. The tree fruit (apple, pear, sweet cherry, apricot, nectarine, peach, and plum) growers will need to use this compound this fall for the control of replant disease. Treatment for replant disease can be done in either the spring or the fall but the preferred practice is to treat in the fall because the growers get better control at this time. Note that fumigation is done by trained professionals who are hired by growers. Having an effective control for replant disease available this fall is very important to the tree fruit growers in our state.
Second - Tree fruit growers continue to need to make herbicide applications in the fall. Diuron (Karmex, Direx, Krovar) is used on pears and apples while oryzalin (Surflan) is used on all the tree fruits.
Thank you again for the opportunity to supply information.
